Newsmap
今我发现了一个挺有创意的新闻网站 Newsmap。该网站是利用 Google News 的资源，然后将新闻进行分类，用更具视觉冲击也更直观的方式呈现出来，但是略显花哨而且颜色太多不易阅读。
最上方的导航是国家，有意大利，英国，美国等多个国家，可以选择一个或者多选。下方右侧是新闻的分类，有世界新闻，国家新闻，商业新闻，健康新闻等多个分类，也可以选择。不同颜色代表不同的分类。
另外右下侧还有图例，颜色最浅的就是最近10分钟的新闻，次浅的为最近10分钟到一小时的，颜色最深的就是一小时之前的。至于新闻方块的大小，我觉得应该是根据同类新闻来源的多少所确定的。
鼠标指针移到一个新闻标题上就会出现新闻概要和新闻图片，点击就能进入新闻来源页面。
当然也不能少了搜索，而且搜索结果的呈现也更视觉化。比如当搜索 swine flu（猪流感）的时候，大部分的新闻都是健康类别里的（紫色）。

Back from holiday

Google's Street View comes to Trade Me
Smaps was offically closed down by TradeMe yesterday and replaced it with Google Maps. Trademe is pretty fast to enhance the Google Maps's new feature street view released in New Zealand today.
The switch lets users of TradeMe Property and its travel accommodation site Travelbug make the most of Google's new Street View programme. Street View is a unique Google Maps feature that allows users of the online software to view 360-degree photographs of the surroundings from a street level. The incorporation of Google's Street View should definitely make house or holiday hunting easier.
Street View New Zealand is live
After a month when Google Maps launched Italy and Spain street view, New Zealand became the 6th country has street view outside the USA.New Zealanders now can look at their homes and streets on Google's controversial Street View software from today.
The 7 countries have street views so far are USA, France , Japan , Australia , Spain , Italy and New Zealand. I personally guess Germany will be the next country.

Show where have you been on Google Maps
29travels
29travels has created a great tool to create your very own personal travel map. Simple by ticking a few countries from a list you can get a short piece of code to show your friends where you have been in the world.
Creating a personal travel map is very easy. First select a continent and then tick the countries you have visited. Next, choose the size of the map you want and the colour you want the countries to be shaded.
Et voila ... you have your very own personal travel map.
Once you embed the iframe in your own web page or blog you can show the world everywhere you have been. The embedded map shows the countries you have visited by shading them your chosen colour. Your embedded map also contains a drop down menu of the countries you have visited. Selecting a country you have visited from the menu will centre the map on that country.

NZ electorate map mashup on Google Maps Mania Blog
Yesterday, Google Maps Mania posted an article titled November Election Map it is about New Zealand electorate map mashup I have built lately. I am feeling happy to see my work being recognized in this way.
It is said:
"Hopefully this is the first of many New Zealand election Google Maps mash-ups. For example, it would be very easy to colour the electorate boundaries on this map to indicate which political party currently holds the seat."
I think this simple map app probably be the first Google maps mush up on NZ election. it will be used for the election section of www.stuff.co.nz.

New Zealand Electorate Map
I have been developing a Google map mashup on New Zealand Election 2008. The election map below is 100% accurate boundaries data(data from www.stats.govt.nz), which contains 63 general electorates and 7 Maori electorates.This map widget helps voters figuring out which electorate they belong to by ticking the electorates and will be used for the election section of www.stuff.co.nz.
After researching some different methods of visualizing the data, the most reliable method utilises is Javascript with the Google Maps API , and Keyhole Mark-up Language (KML) to create a thematic map of the regions. There are a few limitations. Large KML files don't load in Google Maps, medium-sized files load very slowly—it seems Google is parsing the KML using Javascript.
Here is an example Australia 2007 Election, which takes 14.31 seconds, a significant initial loading time.

Street View Australia is Live
Today, Google launched its first street view outside US - Australia, accessed from http://maps.google.com.au/help/maps/streetview/, lets people explore the country at ground level for the first time with little more than a computer and an internet connection.
Google will launch a New Zealand edition of its controversial Street View application within the next few months after agreeing to protect the identity of people filmed in public places, following talks with the privacy commissioner.
Evidences from various sources shown that Google’s Street View army is marching in many major New Zealand cities, including capital city Wellington. In one case, the driver of the Google Street View was kind enough to let this guy take close-up pictures of the car - even the equipments inside the car.

你好 from Google Maps
Google maps has announced that the entire documentation set for the Google Maps API has undergone translation into Japanese and Simplified Chinese.
Around this time last year, Google map released map API of New Zealand, by that time, I was thinking how long it will take for Google to collect the GIS data for China mainland(Google had released Hong Kong map), because I knew it was definitely not easy to do so. Obviously, Google is much much stronger than I thought. The screenshot is my hometown Xi'an , I take it as an example.
